Upper Highway paramedic goes beyond the call of duty

Alan Cutten voluntarily gives up his time to provide free first aid to the community.

FOLLOWING the theft of the Upper Highway volunteer paramedic’s jump bag last year, the community gathered to raise funds for a new bag.

Crestholme resident, Alan Cutten, who started working as an Intermediate Life Support Paramedic for KZN ambulance, provides First Aid for residents in some Upper Highway areas voluntarily.

Crestwatch Neighbourhood chairman, Richard Hipkin, said as a community they couldn’t sit back and do nothing.

“Alan is part of our team and he goes out of his way to help the community. He gives up his time freely, not only in Crestholme but also in Molweni, Accutts Drive, Waterfall and Forest Hill.

“He is often first on scene and even goes beyond just giving first aid.”

Hipkin said there have been many instances which could have turned out for the worst if it was not for Alan’s swift response and assistance.

“It was a matter of life and death that we get him a jump bag. This donation was made possible by Crestwatch, Waterfall 3 neighbourhood Watch, Watercrest Spur and John Dory’s management.”

Alan said he was very happy that he has his own equipment to help the community.

“After my jump bag was stolen last year, I have been borrowing the equipment from a friend who has since moved.”

Alan described what he does as a passion he has for his community.
