Cell C Sharks plant veggie gardens on Mandela Day

"Being able to contribute in a positive way to people who don't have much is always a humbling experience," - Beast Mtawarira

IN celebration of Mandela Day, a day which highlights and honours the legacy of Madiba and on which all South Africans are encouraged to participate in activities that serve to uplift our community, the Cell C Sharks‘ players, admin and ground staff visited the St Monica’s and Durban Children’s homes to plant veggie gardens and interact with the kids from these homes, yesterday (18 July).

The Cell C Sharks have long shown a commitment to making a difference in the lives of those less fortunate and Mandela Day offers, yet another opportunity for us to give back to communities in need of assistance.

The theme for Mandela Day this year is “Eradicating Poverty” and with the Sharks key value of community, we are embracing this theme.

This year they were keen to get involved in a project that could be self-sustainable and where with their input they could make a lasting difference.

Therefore, they undertook this project to Feed our Community – One Veggie Garden at a time. The idea is for the guardians, leaders and kids in these areas to nature these gardens and in the coming months, they will then be able to feed the kids and adults in their community with the veggies that have been grown.

Some of the veggies that were planted were cabbage, lettuce, spinach, carrots, beetroot, pumpkin, green beans and onions.

Cell C Sharks’ players that were involved in the morning’s activities included Beast Mtawarira, Johan Deysel, Rhyno Smith, Franco Marais and Tristan Blewett who all enjoyed the chance to make a difference in the lives of those less privileged.

“Being able to contribute in a positive way to people who don’t have much is always a humbling experience,” said Beast.

“We all know the kind of values that Nelson Mandela stood for: Goodness towards all mankind and doing the right thing to make this beautiful country better for all who live in it, and I feel privileged and proud to play a part in honouring him and keeping the legacy of this great man alive.”
