Yee-haw! Saddle up for Shongweni festival

Make your way to the Durban Shongweni Club next weekend for a fun-filled family day out.

DON your cowboy hat and riding spurs for this year’s Wild West themed Land Rover Durban Horse and Wine Festival at the Durban Shongweni Club on Saturday, 22 July from 11am till late.

Celebrating its fifth year, the event will again offer families an opportunity for a fun and exciting day out.

The premium county fair will feature many action-packed and entertaining events and activities and a selection of high quality food and beverages.

Event organisers, Tam Ward and Nicci Reilly of Blue Diamond Events, said, “We have been hard at work ensuring that we have something to cater for all ages, and are extremely excited about what this year’s festival has to offer.”

For the wild at heart, one of the highlights of the Festival is sure to be the Land Rover Durban Terrapod Experience.

Land Rover Durban will also be giving away 150 free blankets and 200 cowboy hats to the first 350 visitors (one per family).

The tent pegging and polo cross events will feature some of the region’s finest equestrian talent. Other activities on offer include a fancy dress for all ages, a Funda Nenja Township Dog Training Initiative, the singing cowboy, a SAPS Hijacking and Prevention Dog Unit display, line dancing and a barn dance with a country DJ.

For the young (or the young at heart), there is a Wild West themed swat lazer tag course and a mechanical bull ride.

There will be two children’s activity areas, one for children below five years old and another for those between the ages of six to 14 years old.

The variety of food and beverage options is a highlight of the event, with wine tasting, a range of craft beers and quality food vendors, as well as a full craft market.

Funda Nenja, a charity organisation in Mpophomeni, will receive a donation at the event and will also host a display at the show to raise help create awareness for their work.

It was founded in July 2009 and aims to provide uplifting psycho-social services for children by developing greater respect and compassion for all living things using the discipline of dog training.

Entry into the event is R50 per adult and children under 16 years old enter for free. To learn more about the Funda Nenja initiative, visit its website, www.fundanenja.co.za.
