HIGHWAY residents will soon see the return of orange recycling bags.
This comes after Durban Solid Waste (DSW) obtained approval from the executive committee to utilise section 36 of the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA) to buy orange bags without further delay, encouraging the municipality and residents to recycle responsibly again.

“The DA welcomes these steps, following the long period of the non-delivery of orange bags due to the last supplier’s failure to meet the demand,” said Marlaine Nair, DA PR Councillor for Wards 13 and 15.
“The shortages of orange bags have had a negative impact on the city. It has led to non-recycling in the domestic sector. Many people have lost trust in the system and have given up recycling altogether.”
“As a result of the downturn in recycling, many contractors have had to lay off staff. The absence of recycling has also led to additional costs to landfill waste and has had an increased impact on landfill sites.”
The delay in resolving the orange bag crisis, Nair said, has contributed to a great loss to the business sector that is reliant on recycled waste.
