Ethelbert home in need of hosts

"Being a host to a child is one of the most rewarding experiences you can have. It is an opportunity for you and your family to make a positive impact on a child’s life."

THE Ethelbert Child and Youth Care Centre has arranged a Host and Volunteer day for prospective and current hosts and volunteers on Saturday, 10 June.

Ethelbert is looking for community minded individuals who are interested in giving of their time and expertise to enrich the lives of the children it cares for.

“Being a host to a child is one of the most rewarding experiences you can have. It is an opportunity for you and your family to make a positive impact on a child’s life,” said the home’s public relations officer, Gaylene Allen.

The child can visit a host for a day or weekend.

“The purpose of hosting is to give our children an experience of what life in a functional family is like so that they don’t become institutionalised. Therefore, we ask hosts to treat the child they are hosting as they would their own children.

“Take them to the beach for a swim and game of bat and ball, get them to help with baking or gardening, or throw/kick a ball around in the back yard. Just because they are from a children’s home doesn’t mean they need to be treated any differently to children in a functional family. We also ask hosts for commitment and consistency in their hosting so that the child doesn’t feel let down or disappointed,” said Allen.

“Our aim at Ethelbert is to always care and never harm, to embrace and never reject and to always love.”
