Support fallen comrades with poppy purchase

Wear your poppy with pride during the Comrades Marathon and by purchasing one, stand a chance to win a gorgeous getaway.

THE South African Legion will create an avenue of poppies in front of the Wall of Honour.

Its members will also be selling poppies to raise much-needed funds during the Comrades Marathon.

The non-profit organisation has challenged Highway residents to wear a poppy on the day and post a picture on Instagram using the hashtags, #salegion #wearapoppy #werememberthem #comrades2017.

To receive a poppy, make a donation along the route.

For your convenience, and for those not carrying wallets, there is a Zapper code you can scan.

Runners will also be handed a poppy to place on Arthur’s Seat, situated just before Drummond or the half way point. This is a dug-out spot in the bank that is reputed to be a favourite resting spot for Arthur Newton, a five-time winner of the Comrades.

“Legend has it that runners who greeted Arthur and placed a flower in his “seat” will have a good second half,” said Johann Kruger of the SA Legion Durban.

“The poppy is a simple red flower that touches the hearts of everyone. We ask that you kindly wear your poppy with pride on Comrades Day, not only as a memorial to the glorious dead, but as a symbol of life and the hope of peace for the future,” said Johann.
