Girls learn about law and order

Pinetown Girls' learners spent the day learning about law.

LEGAL Aid SA Pinetown office hosted five girls from Pinetown Girls’ High School as part of the Cell C Take A Girl Child to Work initiative.

The girls were introduced to the senior lawyers who briefed them about their work before leaving for the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court.

At the court, two advocates were allocated to them to show them the ropes and the procedures. After the interesting day, the girls were treated to lunch and given Cell C goodie bags

Regional communications officer at Legal Aid, Bongani Mahlangu, said each year they choose a different school to expose to the law industry.

“This year gave us an opportunity to speak to girls about women abuse following the recent cases of brutality against women. Girls need to uplift themselves through education and be confident that they can be successful. Through this programme we hope we inspire them to have better lives,” said Mahlangu.

The Highway Mail spoke to the girls about their day and this is what they had to say:

Lungile Vezi – Yes, I am still interested. I learnt how to solve matters and that you can always use other theories which do not involve law when solving cases.

Thandiwe Manzini – I feel like I am now more interested. There is a myth that lawyers are liars and today I learnt that it not true. To be a lawyer, you have to work hard and I am prepared to do just that.

Nombuso Nzama – I am more interested in the law field as I learnt that being a lawyer, you do not focus on one thing but you experience lot of things and get to work with different kinds of cases.

Xolo Shelembe – I think I inherited the passionate of law from my father who is also a lawyer. Today, I learnt what law is and what happens daily in court. Law is a very complex and diverse field.

Nompumelelo Zaca – This day truly encouraged me to follow my passion of being a lawyer. Today, I experienced how the court works and it procedures.
