Ben hits all the right notes

Benjamin Burton is Highbury Preparatory School's SPAR Star of the Month.

TALENTED musician, Benjamin Burton, is Highbury Preparatory School’s SPAR Star this month.

The Grade 7 learner was selected to play with the KZN Philarmonic Orchestra at their concert on Saturday, 20 May at the Playhouse.

Benjamin’s love of classical music began when he was just four years old.

He saw the KZNPO perform in Hillcrest and after much badgering, his parents finally gave in and bought him a violin for his sixth birthday.

He started lessons with Petya Koleva, principal violinist with the KZNPO, and has been taught by her since.

Benjamin performed in his first music concert at Highbury in Grade 2 and in many more as he thoroughly enjoys playing music alone and together with others.

He played for the Westville Schools’ Orchestra for a while and could hardly wait to join the Highbury Orchestra in Grade 4.

Benjamin had the privilege of performing with the KZNPO for the first time in 2015 and is very excited to be performing with them again this year.

It has been an exciting year for Ben. He started playing with the KZN Youth Orchestra and has just been awarded a Kearsney Music Scholarship.

Gill Scott, Highbury’s HOD for music, said, Benjamin recently started piano lessons at Highbury too and has taken to it with the greatest of ease.

“He is extremely dedicated and has great natural ability, a winning combination for a young musician who has managed to jump a few grades in music in only a few months. Benjamin is an absolute pleasure to teach,” said Scott.
