Hillcrest SAPS welcomes new branch commander

In his spare time, Lt/Col Eric Jacobs visits old age homes and children's homes.

THE passion for serving the community Lt/Col Eric Jacobs had when he joined the police at the tender age of 18, is still alive after 33 years.

Jacobs was appointed as the new Hillcrest SAPS branch commander, head of detectives.

His commitment to making people happy is evident by the welcoming smile you get from him.

He started working at Isipingo SAPS in 1984 and he was the youngest constable in the station.

He worked in the uniform branch and performed various duties in the crime prevention, charge office and support services department.

In 1986, he joined the investigation enquiry staff where he investigated culpable homicide and road traffic cases.

“When I joined the Isipingo Detective Services in 1987, I was exposed to the broader framework of crime investigation and it was at that time that I decided I was going to make detective services my career path,” said Jacobs.

He then completed various courses of crime investigation and attained a diploma in investigation of crime, forensic sciences and criminal investigation.

After 33 years of service in the industry, there is one case that stood out for him.

“I once arrested a man who stabbed a woman to death, but with the forensic experience I had, I ended up linking him to the murder of three other women.”

Jacobs has steadily climbed the ranks and has often found himself in life-threatening situations.

“I have come under many attacks, especially in the informal settlements. It by the grace of God that I am still alive.
