Help eco-champs restore rivers

The river clean-up comes after eco-champs faced extensive dumping of domestic and general waste along the river banks.

CLERMONT Eco-Champs have initiated an innovative and exciting ‘Adopt-a-Spot’ campaign in Clermont to help restore the river environment to a healthy condition.

The eco-champs have found extensive dumping of domestic and general waste along the river banks while doing weekly river health monitoring walks.

“The eco-champs decided that something had to be done and spoke to residents about the need for them to partner with the municipality to keep their river neighbourhood clean.

“The aim of the ‘Adopt-a-Spot’ campaign is to return trashed river sections to pristine condition, contributing to the health of the community, water security and environmental sustainability,” said Aller River Project liaison officer, Thozeka Ntlukwane.

This is done through cleaning up and maintaining the good condition in heavily polluted parts along the river.

Nokuthula Mkhize, one of the Clermont Eco champs said they want the local neighbourhoods to adopt the various spots to maintain the river, keep it clean for the community, bring back wild life and use it as a park and picnic area.

The project is part of the eThekwini ‘Take Back Our Rivers’ initiative which aims to improve the health of eThekwini’s river and of nearby communities through collaboration with the authorities.
