Building a better Africa

The theme for Africa Month this is year is 'The Year of OR Tambo: Building a Better Africa and a Better World'.

TO celebrate Africa Month, Zimbabwean born Bellair artist, Aminos Kadodo, shared with Queensburgh News what being an African means to him.

Africa Day, formerly African Freedom Day and African Liberation Day, is the annual commemoration of the foundation of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) on 25 May 1963.

Aminos was a firefighter before he became an wire-art artist in 2003.

“I love creating things with my hands,” he said.

He said what he loves the most about his home country is the level of education his people have and the fact that it is a peaceful despite the political turmoil.

In recent years South Africa has witnessed some xenophobic attacks on foreign nationals and Aminos feels that these attacks are a waste of time that should be spent on learning more about each other.

“I would like to urge Africans to stop fighting each other and unite. Africa is our home and we are brothers and sisters not enemies,” he said.

His favourite African dish is sadza (pap) and vegetables.

Africa Day continues to be celebrated both in Africa and around the world, mostly on 25 May, although in some cases these periods of celebrations can be stretched out over a period of days or weeks.

Themes are often set for each year’s Africa Day, with 2015’s being the ‘Year of Women’s Empowerment and Development towards Africa’s Agenda 2063’.

The theme for Africa Month this is ‘The Year of OR Tambo: Building a Better Africa and a Better World’.
