Highway’s well-known musician dies

Patrick Purdham will be missed by his high school sweetheart, Gail and his four children.

THE Highway area bids a sad farewell to well-known and popular local musician, Patrick Purdham. He died of a heart attack while running during his holiday on the West Coast of Cape Town.

If you have been to the restaurant Pot and Kettle on a Sunday you would have heard the sounds of his Spanish guitar and smooth vocals playing in the background.

He played there every Sunday for 11 years.

Patrick began performing in restaurants 27 years ago, always alongside his wife, Gail who after 20 years of being the band groupie, decided to learn percussion.

The first restaurant he performed in was the Hungry Duck in Gillitts.

He also played at the Heritage Market and La Pizza in Kloof.

Although an engineer by profession, he had a very humble approach to life and enjoyed the simple beauties such as music, gardening and surfing.

Having built a house in Pinetown 30 years ago he could always be found working in his garden or playing his guitar.

His beautiful music created a peaceful atmosphere with its themes of love. During the last few years, Patrick and Gail were able to record three CDs. Some of the songs are in Zulu and Afrikaans.

He will be missed by his high school sweetheart, to whom he has been married for 43 years his four children and his many fans.

His memorial will be held on Saturday, 27 May at the Westville Baptist Church at 10.30am.

For more information, contact his daughter, Ruth, on 076 254 4359.

Our hearts and prayers are also with the family and friends of these Highway residents.
