Caitlin begins new chapter as chaplain

The new chaplain at St Mary's DSG in Kloof is former learner, Caitlin Barnes.

ST Mary’s DSG was excited to welcome Old Girl, Caitlin Barnes, as its new school chaplain.

Caitlin was head girl in 2006 which gives her a clear understanding of the school’s ethos and vision, which is so important as she embraces this crucial position. When the position of chaplain arose, Caitlin shared that this was her calling as it is her desire and passion to minister. She said it was a beautiful opportunity “to give back to the school that gave me so many opportunities. I believe in everything at St Mary’s.”

After she matriculated from St Mary’s, Caitlin studied a bachelor of social science at UCT majoring in industrial psychology and law. Although she loved law, she was unsure whether this was the lifestyle she wanted to lead so she decided to study a PGCE to expand her options. After teaching at Westville Boys’ High for a year, Caitlin wanted a more creative outlet so she studied brand strategy at VEGA. She worked in brand development at the International Trend Institute (ITI) for almost five years before joining St Mary’s DSG.

Caitlin married Brian in 2011 and four years later they welcomed their son, Judah Zion. Brian recently planted the Westpoint Church, which is based at the Kloof Junior Primary School hall. Together they form part of the eldership team. Now that both Caitlin and Brian are in ministry, Caitlin said, “Our lives have dove-tailed so beautifully. There has been a knitting together of our hearts and that has been an amazing gift to our family.”

Caitlin’s heart is for children and she is a real people’s person. Together, she and Brian have a particular interest and involvement in OrphanAid, providing assistance to orphans in formerly disadvantaged communities in the Valley of 1 000 Hills.

Caitlin loves spending time with her family, whether they are kicking a ball with Judah or throwing a ball for Lucy, their cocker spaniel. They love relaxing at the beach or in the Drakensberg. When Caitlin finds some time for herself, she enjoys reading, running and searching for a new spot to enjoy some good coffee and food.
