Woman gives birth in Pinetown taxi

The baby girl and her mom were transported to hospital in a stable condition.

PARAMEDICS were called to help deliver a baby after a 31-year-old woman went into labour unexpectedly.

The woman was travelling in a minibus taxi on the M13 next to the St Johns bridge on-ramp in Pinetown earlier today.

“The driver was made aware of the situation and he pulled over to the middle island. RTI traffic officers who were nearby went to investigate and called the Netcare 911 paramedics who were also stationed nearby for help,” said Nick Dollman from Netcare 911.

Paramedics rushed to the scene and since there was no time to move the mom to the ambulance, the minibus taxi was emptied to create space and privacy.

“The Netcare 911 team safely delivered the baby in the taxi before moving the mom and her little girl to the ambulance.”

Dollman said although the baby was premature, both mother and daughter were transported to hospital in a stable condition.

“Thanks to the swift action of the traffic officer, the paramedics arrived just in time to take control of the situation and assist as nature followed its course,” he added.
