Engela is a philanthropic ‘gogo’ getter

The local great grandmother has opened her heart to her community through her ongoing work at her church and was nominated for the Highway Mail's super mom competition by her daughter.

LOVING mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Engela Botha, has also opened her heart to many through her work at her church.

The 73-year-old has worked in varying fields and has a host of wonderful stories to tell, from her time working on the railways to driving a school bus and working in a tuck shop.

She believes the most important work she has done is through the outreach programme at the Durban West Dutch Reformed Church.

On a weekly basis, she helps feed families in need. “You don’t do this kind of work unless you feel you are needed to do it. There are so many people out there who don’t have food or homes and you speak to God and he leads you,” said Engela. “If I am called to help, I don’t think I can say no.”

She hands out her number to those she feels may need her and she does her best to try and help them.

She currently works very closely with two families she has met through the church. “Your right hand doesn’t need to know what the left hand is doing and you don’t need to boast about the work you do. You do it because you want to make a difference,” she said.

She was nominated as a supermom by her daughter, Dideray Venter, who described her as having the biggest heart and that no task is ever to small for her to complete.

“My mom just doesn’t have a closed heart or hand. She is very involved in the community and is a hard worker. I have two girls and granny looks after them after school and they have granny date nights because its so much cooler to stay there,” laughed Dideray.

“My mom’s lunch is apparently also so much tastier than the lunch I make.”
