Help sick boy (5) lead normal life

Malwande Sangweni's parents have appealed for donors to finance the cost of accommodation, food and transport to and from the donor hospital.

A RECOVERY fund has been set up for a five-year-old boy who is awaiting a liver transplant.

Malwande Sangweni, who is originally from Vryheid, moved to Durban last year after his parents were informed that he needs to stay in a clean place with running water, electricity and a functioning toilet to be included on the waiting list for a liver transplant.

His father, Innocent Madida, who works in Waterfall, said the boy’s condition deteriorated as he was growing up.

Malwande is expected to undergo a liver transplant soon and his family appeals for donors to finance the cost of accommodation, food and transport to and from the donor hospital in either Johannesburg or Cape Town while Malwande recovers from the procedure.

The operation is to be paid by the State together with flights for the child and his mother to and from the Donor Hospital.

Malwande’s mom, Nokubonga Sangweni, said the last few years have been hard on them.

“Because of his sickness, we spend most of the time in hospitals as he had been ill since he was born.”

It started with yellow eyes and a swollen stomach. Now his skin is dry and itchy, he scratches himself all the time and is tired most of the time,”said Nokubonga.

A friendly and bubbly Malwande was suppose to start Grade R last year but could not, as in October 2015, he lost the use of his legs.

“He can’t walk and he tells me all the time that he wants to walk again and that really pains me,” said Nokubonga.

His father’s employer, Andy van den Heuvel said these expenses are expected to be R8000 per month for a period of 12 months.
