Car thief ‘bowled’ over by Westville players

One of the bowls players chucked a bowl at the windscreen of the getaway vehicle as other players pummelled the car with stones.

A CAR thief and his accomplices were stopped in their tracks by a group of men from the Westville Bowls Club on Saturday.

According to one of the bowls players, who did not wish to be named, the men heard a car alarm go off.

A fellow bowls player popped his head over the hedge to check on the vehicle. He saw a man in a white hoodie inside the car in question.

“The bowls player shouted at the thief, who quickly jumped out of the vehicle and climbed into a white Audi A3 that was waiting for him,” said the local bowls player.

There were about 60 men on the greens that day and all of them ran into the parking lot.

“The getaway vehicle had to go around the traffic circle to get off the grounds and was stopped by the group of us on the way out. By that time they were blocked by us and a few cars and we chucked stones at their car. One of the players chucked a bowl through the windscreen,” said the bowls player.

The four men in the getaway car jumped out and ran into the nearby park, the area where the Westville Fair is held annually.

“I contacted the police immediately and the getway car was collected and impounded,” he said.
