Cronjes toast 65 years of marital bliss

Mervyn and Marie Cronje said they both came from different backgrounds but always persevered through their marriage.

WESTVILLE residents, Marie and Mervyn Cronje, celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on Sunday and described their marital journey as a good trip.

The two met when Mervyn was at university in Pretoria. Marie worked with his cousin. He said it was definitely love at first sight – he loved her legs when he first saw her.

They tied the knot at the Magistrate’s Court in Pretoria on 23 April 1952.

The couple said they have shared a beautiful marriage together with their secret to a long-lasting marriage being trust, respect and love for each other. They were blessed with five sons – Andre, Pierre, Eugene, Etienne and Mervyn and now have five wonderful daughter-in-laws, 11 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Back then Mervyn was an accountant and Marie a housewife.

 

Mervyn and Marie Cronje were married on 23 April 1952.

 

They said they came from different backgrounds – language, religion and social groups but always persevered through their marriage.

Mervyn and Marie said they were avid campers/caravaners.

Mervyn enjoyed squash while Marie took a liking to tennis.

They also share a passion for cars. They own a 1974 Triumph Stag and are honorary members of the Triumph Sports Car Club Natal. The Cronjes created great friendships along the way which have lasted a lifetime.

Their son Eugene, said it was a privilege for them to still have their parents who play such an active part in their lives.

They celebrated their special occasion with family and a few friends at a special dinner on Sunday.
