Robbers strike at KwaDabeka NPO

Enhlanhleni Isibani Sezwe runs a daily soup kitchen and was left with no food after criminals broke into the centre.

AN NPO that assists the community, especially children, with food and support programmes was broken into on Sunday, 16 April.

Founder of Enhlanhleni Isibani Sezwe, Pastor Alfred Ntshangase, said the robbers gained entry to the storage area through the roof of the building.

“They cleaned us out, they took about 10 bags of rice, seven bags of mealie meal, six 5litres of oil, 11 2litres of oil, milk, sugar and clothes,” said Ntshangase.

He said they receive the donations from the community, companies and some churches.

“The clothes are given to our beneficiaries and others we sell as part of our fundraising project. The money we get helps us to buy food, fill up the gas canisters which we use for cooking and to hire transport.”

The NPO was started in 2005 by Ntshangase with a soup kitchen where they fed disadvantaged learners, children and adults who are on medication twice a week.

“I started the NPO after I noticed an increase in the number of orphans, abandoned and abused children in my Sunday school.

“We started small with a few people but now we have our soup kitchen from Monday to Friday. After school, about 90 children come to the centre, have a meal and we also help them with their homework,” he said.

On an average day, Ntshangase said they use more than 10kg of rice or 10kg of mealie meal to cook for their soup kitchen but sometimes, adults who are on medication or needs counselling also come to the centre and they have to cook more food.

The NPO has caregivers and a social worker who helps the centre with its daily services.

Ntshangase said they are appealing to anyone who can assist them with food or clothing donations. He can be contacted on 073 409 6386 or 082 666 0876.
