Westville house robbers convicted

Both suspects were sentenced to 18 years and 15 years respectively.

WESTVILLE police have applauded the two successful convictions for two separate house robbery cases.

Capt Elizabeth Squires, communications officer at Westville SAPS, said 19-year-old, Sphamandla Gumede was arrested by Westville Crime Prevention members, Constable Mphiwa Buthelezi and Constable Sandile Cele shortly after a house robbery was reported in Pitlochry Road in October 2015.

“The members followed up on information and the goods were recovered.”

“Detective W/O Dumisani Sithole from Westville Detectives opposed bail and investigations continued. Gumede was sentenced to 18 years imprisonment for housebreaking with intent to rob as well as robbery with aggravating circumstances on 28 March,” said Squires.

In a separate case, Detective W/O Suren Sunder, also secured a conviction and imprisonment for a house robbery suspect who broke into a house in Victoria Crescent, Westville in June 2015.

Long hours were spent tracking the alleged robber and due to intensive investigations, 19-year-old, Cebelihle Soni, was arrested. Soni was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment.

“Both D/W/O Sunder and Sithole have been praised and commended for their investigation,” added Squires.
