Sandown Retirement Village celebrates 25 years of service

To celebrate the occasion, Sandown Retirement Village hosted a street braai for residents on Friday, 21 April.

SANDOWN Retirement Village in Pinetown celebrates its silver anniversary this year.

Mike Jackson, chairman of the retirement village, said Sandown first opened its doors to the community on 10 April 1992.

It boasts 149 cottages with 245 residents.

“The average age for residents here is 76. We have two residents who are over 80 and one resident, Bonnie Baxter, is the longest serving resident here.

“She has been here for the last 25 years,” said Jackson.

The amenities at the home includes a restaurant, snooker room, well stocked library, card room, private dining room for residents and guests.

There’s also a Med Care Centre (frail care) that has 17 beds.

Residents enjoy the services of the village bus which transports them to shopping malls twice a week and on planned trips to the theatre or social outings.

“We try and encourage people who come here to have their own lifestyle. The minimum age for residents is 50, however, we do not have any restrictions,” said Jackson.

To celebrate the occasion, Sandown Retirement Village is hosting a street braai for residents outside the Med Care Centre on Friday, 21 April from 2.30pm.

Jackson is expecting more than 80 people to attend.

He approached the Spar stores in the Highway area and they agreed to supply products for the braai and raffle.

Westville Theatre Club will provide the entertainment in the lounge at 6pm.

“I’ve been here for seven years already and couldn’t have chose a better retirement home,” said Jackson.
