Mariannhill Landfill site causes a stink

Residents say they have in recent months been plagued by a stench emanating from the Mariannhill Landfill site.

THE smell emanating from the Mariannhill Landfill site has become unbearable for Mariannhill Park residents.

Mariannhill Park Watch chairman, Brian Mills, who has lived in the area for more than 17 years, said the smell has been there for years but it has never been this bad.

“Since the beginning of last month, the smell has become unbearable and it goes on for the whole day and sometimes non-stop for up to three days.”

“On the bad days, even people in Pinetown can smell it,” he said.

Mills said the area is divided into seven zones and they are in the A zone where the smell is stronger.

“It is not there everyday but when it starts, we are forced to close the doors and use the aircon. We cannot enjoy a meal or walk outside. One of our worries is the negative impact the smell will have when a resident wants to sell his/her house. This smell will chase away potential buyers.”

Mills said the site use to spray a perfume before the machines sorted the waste.

The resident said he reported this matter numerous times with no response.

The Highway Mail asked DSW for comment, but there has, to date, been no response.

This follows the highly controversial Shongweni Lanfill case. Residents have, for years, argued that the toxic odor said to emanating from the site have been making them sick.
