Giffy shares nature’s beauty through art

Local artist, Giffy Duminy transforms the grubby bridge in Village Road.

IN keeping with Keep Kloof Beautiful Association‘s (KKBA) mission to improve tatty zones, Cooke Fuller and Garrun Insurance have partnered to transform the grubby bridge in Village Road.

Flora and fauna highlighted in this eye-catching mural created primarily with aerosol paints, by Giffy Duminy, a local artist who grew up in the area, and has fond memories of these elements in his garden. It is sure to become a talking point for residents and visitors alike.

“With the written permission and support of municipal and provincial road authorities, our desire to improve living and work space aesthetics with an appropriate art form on this bridge has been recognised, for which we are delighted,” said Sandra Wickee from KKBA.

Giffy said painting this bridge wall in Kloof has been a dream come true for him.

“I have lived in Kloof for most my life and I wanted to paint this wall ever since I picked up my first spray can.”

He said it seemed quite unrealistic until about a year and a half ago when he met with Sandra Wickee from the Keep Kloof Beautiful association.

“We took a drive around Kloof, scouting for potential walls to beautify. I pointed out this bridge wall on Village Road which seemed a bit ambitious at the time, but thanks to the Keep Kloof Beautiful Association, we made it happen,” he said.

The mural is made up of plants and animals that are indigenous to South Africa and Giffy’s hometown, Kloof. He said the complexity and poetry in nature fascinates him.

“The cycles and repeated processes of the interaction between the different parts of each ecosystem is awe inspiring.

“I aim to create an appreciation for these beautiful plants and animals. I hope that people will realise how precious our local wildlife is and take this into consideration when deciding on developing land that these plants and animals depend on.

“I believe a large portion of society has become disconnected from nature and it’s beauty. I want to reconnect this bond of love and appreciation through my art,” he said.
