eThekwini Mayor retracts her announcement about protest march tomorrow

The City has granted permission for two marches to take place in the City tomorrow.

MAYOR Cllr Zandile Gumede has retracted her announcement that those participating in the protest march tomorrow will be arrested for treason.

In a statement on the eThekwini Municipality’s Facebook page, Cllr Gumede said no-one will be arrested or intimidated for taking part in the march.

She pleaded with residents to march peacefully and in a legally permissible manner without damaging property, injuring law-abiding citizens or blockading roads, thus preventing others from going to school and work.

eThekwini Municipality is aware of and has granted permission for two marches to take place in the City tomorrow, 7 April 2017.

The City has granted permission for the #peoplesmarch that will commence at the Circus site near Suncoast Casino and Entertainment World. The march is expected to go along the beachfront.

There will also be an ANC Youth League march which will take place in the City Centre. Permission has also been granted for this march.

“In order to ensure the safety of residents and those taking part in the march, Metro Police officers will be visible along the march routes. Our officers will also be on high alert for any other illegal marches or volatile situations that might arise,” said Gumede.

eThekwini Municipality acknowledged that people are free to exercise their constitutional rights by voicing their concerns and taking part in marches, however this may not be done in a way that compromises the rights of others. Those taking part in the marches are cautioned against injuring others and vandalising infrastructure.

Law enforcement personnel will monitor  the movements of vehicles and to ensure that traffic disruption is minimised. They will also take the necessary enforcement action where there are transgressions.
