Lend your green fingers to HACT project

If you have some spare time on your hands and enjoy working in the garden in a wonderful environment, then HACT's Plant Nursery is the perfect place for you.

VOLUNTEER your time and help the Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust’s (HACT) Plant Nursery blossom into a burgeoning income generation project.

It has been in existence for more than 10 years and offers a wide selection of plants and garden décor to the public. The initiative is one of the organisation’s income-generating projects and every month supports local families impacted by HIV/AIDS through the proceeds raised from sales.

“The Nursery is heavily reliant on the time and skills of several volunteers who work alongside HACT’s small team of nursery staff on a daily basis,” said HACT’s marketing and fundraising manager, Claire Hodgkinson.

John Lund is a retired banker who has both worked and volunteered at the centre for the past 17 years. As part of his daily duties at the centre, John oversees the running of the Plant Nursery and its dedicated team. Speaking of his role, John said, “The AIDS Centre is such a special place and the Nursery project especially has come along in leaps and bounds during the past few years. There’s no other place I like to spend my time other than outdoors on the nursery grounds, working alongside the nursery staff and assisting our customers.”

HACT’s Plant Nursery team is currently appealing for any locally based, green-fingered volunteers who have a day or two a week to spare and would be willing to assist with the general running and upkeep of the nursery. This will include the daily weeding, propagating and potting duties, assisting and advising customers and helping with basic stock counts, ordering and admin.

Anyone who is interested in volunteering at the HACT Plant Nursery can contact the organisation’s marketing and fundraising manager, Claire Hodgkinson on 031 765 5866 or via e-mail at fundraising@hillaids.org.za.
