Police recover stolen cars used in Pinetown cash-in-transit heist

The two getaway vehicles were found abandoned in New Germany.

AN unlicensed firearm was also found in the possession of the 50-year-old man who was arrested this morning after the Pinetown shoot-out.

The man was arrested after unknown gunmen attacked SBV security guards, killing one of the guards.

KZN police spokesman, Lt/Col Thulani Zwane said a white Honda Accord and grey Mercedes Benz were used by the robbers as the their getaway cars.

“The two getaway vehicles were later found abandoned in different areas in New Germany with the ignitions still switched,” said Zwane.

He said investigations at the scene also revealed that the Honda was hijacked in Phoenix this month and the Mercedes was hijacked in Newlands East.

KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa condemned the attack of the law enforcers.

“The detective team will work around the clock to ensure that all those involved are locked behind bars. We are appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident to contact the local police station or our Crime Stop number on 086 0010 111,” he said.

An undisclosed amount of cash was taken as well as two security guards’ firearms and charges of cash-in-transit, murder and attempted murder are being investigated by Pinetown SAPS.
