Men nabbed with R44 000 worth of copper

The two men were found with 36 bags of Telkom copper at a New Germany scrapyard.

TWO men were arrested on Wednesday morning for being in possession of stolen copper worth R44 000 during an intelligence driven operation between Pinetown Crime Intelligence, Pinetown Crime Prevention and Imvula Security.

Pinetown SAPS communications officer, Capt Bongumusa Manqele said police received information about a van that was transporting copper to a scrap metal dealership in New Germany.

“They observed the dealership and when the van approached, police stopped the vehicle and found 36 bags of Telkom copper. The two men aged 34 and 53 were immediately arrested and charged for possession of suspected stolen property,” said Manqele.

The street value of the copper is estimated to be around R44 000. The arrested suspects are expected to appear in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court soon.
