Chaos erupts in Pinetown following deadly shootout

One security guard was reportedly shot dead while a second is in critical condition.

MOODIE Steet in Pinetown has been compared to a war zone after an alleged cash-in-transit heist unfolded in the early hours of this morning. It is believed that several pedestrians were caught in the cross fire between armed guards and a gang of suspects, said Blue Security media and community liaison officer, Andreas Mathios.

According to Rescue Care’s Garrith Jameson, one of the guards was shot dead while the second was critically injured.

It is unclear at this stage if any arrests have been made.

He said road closures have been implemented on Moodie Street, Hill Street as well as Dales Avenue.

Highway Mail reporter, Lloyd Mackenzie, who is at the crime scene, said hundreds of people have gathered at the intersection of Moodie Street and Dales Avenue. Motorists are urged to avoid the area.

Updates to follow.
