Pinetown pensioners breathe easier since bill resolved

A local branch of attorneys took up the Pientown couple's case and help rectify their R300 0000 Metro bill woes.

A SENIOR couple had a hefty weight taken off their shoulders and they can finally breathe a little easier knowing that their R300 000 shock Metro bill has been amended.

“We would like to thank the Highway Mail for publishing the article on 13 January regarding our ‘overdue’ electricity account of R356 648.86.

“This resulted in Andrew Leaker and his staff at Morris Fuller Anderson Attorneys stepping forward and offering their services pro bono to try and resolve the issue of our exorbitant account.”

“We are now happy to report that we have received an adjusted account showing a reversal of the ‘overdue amount’.”

It is wonderful to know that there are still good Samaritans, as without their input, I am sure we would still be trying to access a contact at the eThekwini Municipality – they really went the extra mile,” said a grateful Dorothy Hardie.

The Pinetown pensioners’ battle to rectify their bill began in June last year and the couple said it added unnecessary stress to their lives.

Their average usage never reached more than R1 300 prior to the June bill, which was in excess of R100 000.

Despite the bill continuing with a steady incline to the final amount of R356 648.86, they continued to pay R1 500 each month.

Andrew Leaker, one of the directors at Morris Fuller Williams Attorneys met with the Hardie’s and kindly agreed to look into the challenges they were facing and said he would attempt to resolve them.

“With the help of Chris Finnymore and Shamine Francis, we are delighted to report that this matter has finally been put to rest and the Hardie’s no longer have to stress about their electricity being cut-off.

“It has come to light that this is unfortunately not an isolated case. We can only hope that the eThekwini Municipality takes heed of these ongoing issues and addresses them post haste,” said the marketing and public relations officer at Morris Fuller Williams, Sonja Davies.
