Grade Rs have bags of fun

Uzwelo’s goal is to provide 50 000 school bags to underprivileged school children this year.

GRADE R learners from Egcekeni Primary School near Shongweni Dam were showered with gifts in the form of Uzwelo schoolbags, juice and snacks by a team from Expand a Sign.

The Uzwelo Bags initiative, spearheaded by Expand a Sign, involves the company donating thousands of metres of their waste textile fabric to teams of people from underprivileged backgrounds who sew to make unique and truly South African bags.

Uzwelo COO, Tanya Bailey said this initiative helps people earn a living and provide for their families.

“Our visit to the school was incredibly special as we saw the sheer delight exuded from these precious children as they each received their very own schoolbag.”

Bailey encouraged other organisations to consider supporting initiatives like Uzwelo Bags that see the community benefiting directly through their support.

“Uzwelo’s goal is to provide 50 000 school bags to underprivileged school children this year. We appeal to the community to be a part of changing lives by pledging R130 to donate a new school bag to an underprivileged child,” she said.
