Robbery victim nabs thief after intense manhunt in Pinetown

A robber broke into a Pinetown granny flat and was later caught trying to rob another home.

BLUE Security’s crime scene cameraman, Adreas Mathios, fell prey to a robber at his Pinetown home yesterday. After a lengthy manhunt, Mathios arrested the robber.

The security company’s operations manager, Brian Jackson, said Mathios was on standby at home when a robber entered his property at around 11am.

“He was an opportunistic criminal who strolled onto the property through the front gate”.

“He was spotted by the Mathios family’s German Shepherd, which sounded the alarm. He was also identified via a CCTV surveillance camera on site,” Jackson said.

Mathios, who is nicknamed Superman for his swift response to many local crime scenes, said he went outside to investigate just as the robber slipped out of a granny flat on the property.

“I lunged at him and yelled for my dog to come and help. The robber fled and escaped around the side of my yard and forced his way out of the main gate,” said Mathios.

Mathios released a description of the robber, who stole cash from a relative who lives in the flat, via social media. The local neighbourhood watch groups sprung into action. He said the Ashley and Pineridge Neighbourhood Watch groups played a pivotal role in helping him track down the man.

“The man was eventually spotted trespassing on a property in Kings Road where, with the assistance of Blue Security, we arrested him and handed him over to the Pinetown police at the scene,” concluded Mathios. A case of theft and trespassing was opened at the Pinetown police station.
