Residents help nab two hijackers

The two gunmen held up the driver of a bakery truck in Inchanga.

INCHANGA residents helped police arrest two men who hijacked the driver of a bakery truck on Tuesday, 7 March.

According to Pinetown SAPS communications officer, Capt Bongumusa Manqele, the driver was delivering bread at the Fredville store when he was approached by two gunmen.

“The men demanded cash from the victim and took two cellphones. They allegedly forced the driver to drive the truck towards a gravel road. The truck driver managed to jump out the truck and ran away, and asked for help from the nearby community. While hiding in the bushes, he saw community members allegedly assaulting the two men who hijacked him,” said Manqele.

The safe from the truck was opened and an undisclosed amount of cash was taken.

A case of hijacking was opened at Inchanga police station and the men were handed to the police.

“Both men were found in possession of a .38 special revolver which will be taken for ballistic tests. The arrested suspects aged 18 and 24 years will appear in the Camperdown Magistrate’s Court today facing cases of hijacking and possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

The KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa praised the Inchanga residents for assisting the police in apprehending the two men who were involved in the hijacking.

“This shows that a strong partnership with police and community in our province can decrease crime and make sure that those involved are behind bars. I further appeal to the community to continue with their support in helping the police in the fight against crime,” he said.
