Motorists urged to obey parking rules

It is believed shoppers fail to demonstrate any consideration of the laws that govern most motorists regarding parking.

A CONCERNED resident has expressed her frustrations over the parking space at the Malvern Park Shopping Centre. In a detailed e-mail, Tina McMurray, argues that there ought to be a penalty for drivers who park within yellow lines and over markings, which makes it almost impossible for motorists to drive through.

“We, the law abiding motorists and long term residents and rate payers of Malvern are very agitated by the lack of knowledge and flaunting of rules of the road by both car guards and ‘visiting’ shoppers,” she wrote. She said shoppers who either live or drive through Malvern to shop at Checker’s demonstrate no care or consideration of laws that govern most motorists regarding parking.

“I sometimes try to park outside the front of Checkers so that my 80-year-old mother does not have to walk too far. When I see it is choc-a-block we try to drive down the ramp to the cool underground parking. However, there is so much congestion because car guards allow selfish drivers to block the driveway to the down-ramp by parking on the yellow lines and other drivers park on the yellow lines alongside the railings opposite Copy Magic which also narrows the two lane entry and exit into one lane,” McMurray stated.

Among her grievances, she said that car guards did not know the law and allow drivers to park on any yellow line and cars obstruct the flow of cars and that there were no boards with management information.

“South Africa is the only country in the world that has car guards. I am of the opinion that car guards are not helpful. They want money every time we park. They do not watch your car and hinder us when we try to reverse out of a parking bay by walking slowly right behind our vehicle,” she added.

Management at Malvern Park Shopping Centre had not replied to questions sent to them at the time of publication.
