KZN Dept of Education distributes free sanitary pads

The project started running in the Ilembe District and is expected to be introduced in all KZN districts.

THE KZN Department of Education has initiated and launched a project to provide sanitary pads for school-going girls in selected quintiles 1 – 4 schools and in Grade 4 to 12. The project started in the Ilembe District late last year and is expected to run in all KZN districts.

Principal of Sithengile Secondary School in Clermont, Mr Thusi said he had no idea about this project but would love his school to be part of this initiative.

“I think this is a great initiative. We have been called to an urgent meeting today, (Wednesday, 1 February). I hope that will be in the agenda,” he said.

According to the KZN Department of Education, this initiative seeks to reduce the drop-out rate of girl learners caused by missing out on school, due to not being able to afford sanitary pads.

The first four packs of sanitary pads per learner (for use from January to April 2017) were distributed to 2 992 schools in January and will be stored at schools.

Each learner will then receive a pack each month either from the school principal or a school based official. It is expected that the next delivery will commence in the next financial year should the funds be available.

From January 2017, principals of the schools concerned will receive orientation from SNES district officials on the provisioning of sanitary pads.
