TENSION was evident in Durban CBD this afternoon, as protesting members of the ANC Youth League gathered outside the ABSA Bank on Anton Lembede Street in Durban, bringing traffic to a halt and forcing the bank to close. The ANC Youth League demanded that the financial service provider pay back an amount of R2-billion rand – which they claim was illegally obtained during the apartheid era.
This was revealed by an ANC Youth League leader who anonymously spoke to reporters at the scene. He said the march, which started at 11am this morning was a peaceful one. Due to the protest action the bank has been closed temporarily.
While crowds have begun dispersing at the branch on Anton Lembede Street in the Durban CBD, traffic is still heavily affected. A heavy police presence is still visible.
The Youth League leader also claimed that the decision to march was passed down from provincial leadership. There have been no confirmed arrests.
