UPDATE: Two arrested for New Germany hijacking

The two men will be profiled to establish if they are linked to any other violent crimes in the province.

THE two men who hijacked and shot a man (75) in New Germany on Monday morning have been arrested. KZN police spokesman, Lt/Col Thulani Zwane said the eThekwini Inner and Outer West police conducted an operation on the day which led to the arrest of the two men aged 38 and 43.

The men allegedly fled with the elderly man’s vehicle after they shot him in the leg and abdomen.

“The victim was in his Hyundai motor vehicle at Pioneer road, New Germany when he was approached by two suspects.” 

Zwane said the victim managed to shoot back at the hijackers but they overpowered him and took his firearm as well as his vehicle. After the suspects fled, the victim was taken to the hospital.

“A case of hijacking and attempted murder was opened at Pinetown police station. Police immediately began the investigation following up on information with regards to the whereabouts of the suspects.” 

A car fitting the description of the hijacked vehicle was soon spotted in the KwaDabeka area. Two suspects were arrested with a firearm in their possession. Police suspect that it was the same one used in the hijacking, said Zwane. He confirmed that the hijacked vehicle had also been recovered.

The arrested men will appear in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court facing charges of hijacking, attempted murder as well as possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
