AUDIO: Second M7 truck crash victim dies in hospital

Hospital staff battled for half an hour to resuscitate the man after he went into cardiac arrest.

FOLLOWING the massive truck crash on the M7, near Wakesleigh this afternoon, Rescue Care’s Garrith Jamieson confirmed that the second victim, who they rescued from the wreckage, had died at Albert Lutuli Inkosi Hospital.

Jamieson said two people were killed and three others injured after two trucks and a bakkie collided on the M7 East before Wakesleigh Road earlier today. He said paramedics worked underneath the truck to stabilise the man.

Durban Search and Rescue were called to assist, and with the help of a large tow truck rig, the truck was lifted off the man who was placed on a manual ventilator and rushed to a nearby level one trauma unit.

However, a short while after he arrived, he went into cardiac arrest and despite efforts from paramedics and doctors, he was declared dead.

“Two occupants from the bakkie had suffered moderate injuries and were stabilised before being transported to a nearby hospital. The second truck driver was also taken to hospital for minor injuries,” said Jamieson.

It is uncertain what caused the collision, however, it is believed one of the trucks had broken down.
