FRANTIC parents and children stormed school uniform and stationery stores this week to make the necessary purchases in time for Wednesday, the first day of the new term.
Idris Pandor, GEM managing director said the last minute rush to purchase uniforms is an age old phenomenon which is experienced country-wide. He said the trick is to avoid the rush and disappointment by buying early in December and also to budget the cost of uniforms before Christmas.
“Another tip is to buy a size or two bigger to last longer,” he said.
He added that their stores will be open on all Sundays this January between 9am and 12pm to accommodate parents who cannot come in during normal trading times.
Parents had to dig deep into their pockets to prepare their children for the new years as a standard full school uniform is estimated at about a R1500 for a primary school child, excluding PE and sports’ kits, stationery and school fees.
Short-sleeved shirts or blouses cost from R 60 with long-sleeved shirts or blouse ranging from R65.
Blazers will set you back at least R320 while girls tunics and dresses cost from R140.
Golf shirts are from R80. Jerseys, pullover or cardigan, cost from R130. Boys shorts are from R60 while boys long pants are from R110.
Skirts cost from R75 while shoes for boys and girls start from R215.
Boys and girls socks are from R19 while school ties are from R22.
