Seven Kearsney boys celebrate seven distinctions each

The school’s 105 matrics achieved an impressive 240 distinctions between them.

KEARSNEY College’s class of 2016 has done it again, with a 100 percent pass rate and an outstanding 98.1 per cent Bachelor’s Degree Pass (university exemption).

Two Kearney College boys, Cameron Rencken and Gianluca Pauselli, were on the IEB’s Commendable List, for being in the top five per cent of all IEB candidates in five subjects.

Kieran Smith was in the top 1 per cent in the country in mathematics and physical science and received seven distinctions  – mathematics 99 per cent, physical science 97 per cent, drama 86 per cent, life sciences 86 per cent, English 84 per cent, life orientation 84 per cent, AP Maths 80 per cent.

Kearsney’s Gianluca Pauselli (6 As), Nicholas Carroll (7), Jared Meyer (5) and Kyle Howard (6) achieved 24 distinctions between them.

Highlighting its consistent success in maths and science excellence, 49.4 per cent of boys who wrote mathematics attained distinctions (compared with the national average of 27 per cent across all IEB schools) and 47.5 per cent in physical science (compared to 19% in IEB schools). Eight of the country’s top 50 physical science achievers were from Kearsney. This is the sixth consecutive year Kearsney has achieved approximately double the IEB average in these subjects.

Kearsney’s Cameron Rencken (7), Kwanda Bhengu (6), Nicholas Carroll (7), Taahir Essay (7) Sameer Vawda (6) achieved 33 distinctions between them.

In engineering graphics and design (EGD) 64 per cent of boys achieved distinctions, 47 per cent in accounting, 64 per cent in drama and 49 per cent in music. In English, 93 per cent of boys achieved above 60 per cent and two placed in the top 1 per cent of all candidates in the country.

Kearsney College’s proud headmaster, Elwyn van den Aardweg said this extraordinary set of results in mathematics and physical science is remarkable, and reflects the hard work, dedication and discipline from boys and staff, with support from parents, throughout the year.

“These results are stellar and maths and science in particular are key to success”.

The school’s 105 matrics achieved an impressive 240 distinctions between them – an average of 2.3 distinctions each. Over a quarter of Kearsney boys achieved four or more distinctions and over a third achieved three or more.

Seven Kearsney boys each received seven distinctions – Cameron Rencken, Nicholas Carroll, Craig Barth, Taahir Essay, Grant Oliver, Keiran Smith and Jason Pilbrough. Jason achieved 99 per cent for EGD, 97 per cent for IT, mathematics and physical science, as well as 90 per cent for AP Maths.

Nine boys each achieved six distinctions, including Gianluca Pauselli; head prefect Luke Croshaw, who played KZN rugby and was captain of the school’s 1st water polo and 1st soccer teams; and David Weaver, a provincial water polo player, 1st XV rugby player and member of the award winning Kearsney College Choir, who attained 99% for EGD; reinforcing the school’s emphasis on balance. Kwanda Bhengu, Cuan Crocker, Kyle Howard, Kelian Massa, Daniel van Zyl and Sameer Vawda also received six As each.
