Woman arrested for abandoning newborn baby

The woman who abandoned her baby in a taxi at the Pavilion Shopping Centre earlier this month has been arrested.

A 37-YEAR-OLD woman was arrested in Embo near Hillcrest last night for abandoning a newborn baby in a taxi in Westville.

On Sunday, 4 December, the baby was found hidden under a taxi seat at the Pavilion Shopping Centre with a note from the mother, apologising for abandoning the child.

Westville SAPS communications officer, Capt Elizabeth Squires, said the woman was arrested by the Pinetown Cluster FCS officers, Sgt Ethel Ndlovu and Cst Lihle Mlotshwa who worked tirelessly to trace the woman.

She added that the woman will be charged accordingly and commended the officers for their hard work.
