Massive donation restores young women’s dignity

One woman changed the lives of 54 girls at a school in the Valley of 1 000 Hills.

A GROUP of girls at Ukusakwabasha School recently received donated packs of Subz washable and reusable sanitary pads.

Meryl Trevethan who volunteers once a week at the school to assist with remedial classes, contacted Sue Barnes from Subz Pants and Pads and ordered 54 packs of Subz washable and reusable sanitary pads for the young girls at the school. She heard about the Subz packs through the Nation Changers project at the City Hill Church in Hillcrest.

Brenda McCann and Bongi Msomie joined Meryl for the hand over. The learners were between the ages of 10 to 14 years old. Brenda spoke to them about puberty and menstruation and Bongi kindly assisted with translation to ensure that they understood what they were being taught. Bongi is the SA netball captain and also works for the NPO, Girls Only Project. Bongi also spoke to the girls about sport and the importance of taking part in it.

“With the Subz packs, the girls will be able to participate in sports without any fear during their period,” she said.

The learners were each given a pack of Subz washable and reusable sanitary pads and panties, which should last them for up to three years.

“This is a huge relief to the young women as they now don’t have to worry about where they are going to find the money to buy sanitary wear each month,” said Meryl. When asked what the girls were currently using, a few of them said they used toilet paper and rags.
