KHBA go choo choo for conservation

The railway lines are maintained in Hillcrest thanks to the Keep Hillcrest Beautiful Association and Chris Harburn.

THE rail line and reserve through Hillcrest is a precious open space that is utilised often by residents and is maintained through the Keep Hillcrest Beautiful Association.

Marge Mitchell, the chairman of KHBA, described the area as one of the few open spaces left in the busy hub of Hillcrest and was delighted that it was used by dog walkers and cyclists.

Chris Harburn of Giba Gorge sponsors the clean up project and the Keep Hillcrest Beautiful Association provides the manpower and the tools. The two men who work to maintain the area are Vukani Cele and Vusi Mkhize. They also remove invasive alien plants and pick up litter to ensure the line remains pristine.

“They are very proud of their efforts and receive loads of compliments from cyclists and walkers. We are so grateful to Chris for his support and interest,” said Marge.

She also noted that the Inchanga Choo Choo, a train that travels to Inchanga on the last Sunday of the month, is frequented by tourists and the work that is done on the rail road enhances their travel experience.
