Cobra spits deadly venom at security guard

The man was taken to a specialised facility in Durban for the anti-venom treatment.

A SECURITY guard employed at a safari park in Botha’s Hill had a close encounter with a highly venomous Mozambique Spitting Cobra.

According to Michelle Smith, medical director at Meditech, the man was doing a security check at a perimeter fence and had stepped up on a ledge on Saturday morning, 26 November when he saw the snake.

“Unaware of its species, the Mozambique Spitting Cobra spat its toxic venom in his face which went directly into one of his eyes,” said Smith.

Meditech was alerted and dispatched advanced life support paramedics immediately. He was treated at the scene and taken to a specialised facility in Durban for ongoing anti-venom treatment.

“The man was admitted in hospital for observation for a few days to see if the venom and treatment had any adverse affects,” said Smith.

The Mozambique Spitting Cobra is very a common snake in Africa with potent venom.
