Janine draws inspiration from the environment

Westville resident, Janine Jollands is celebrating her first solo exhibition at the Artspace in Durban.

AFTER 20 years of not having a solo exhibition, Westville resident, Janine Jollands is exhibiting her artwork at an exhibition at the Artspace in Durban.

Jollands who is passionate about art has been teaching visual art at Westville Boys’ High School for more than 25 years.

She said she loves interpreting the environment, “be it people, places or moments in time.”

“I have always painted and I am a Fine Art graduate. I have taught at different schools and I started teaching part time, but I was employed permanently when the school grew. Being a wife, a mother and a full time teacher keeps me busy and I only paint in the evenings and on weekends.

I draw most of the things I see around me, but drawing faces is my passion at this point and abstract art. I draw faces of ordinary people and not celebrities. I do not look for certain beauty, because I believe that everyone has some kind of sparkling character about themselves. I look for that special and unique character about a person,” said Jollands.

She has exhibited at private and public galleries and has sold her work nationally and internationally. Jollands exhibition is displayed at the Artspace in Durban and will be taken down on Thursday, 1 December.
