Two arrested in R1.8-million Pinetown drug bust

Durban Metro Police and the Hawks joined forces to take down two alleged drug dealers.

TWO alleged drug dealers were caught with various drugs worth R1.8-million in the Pinetown area on Friday, in a joint operation between the Durban Metro Police and the Hawks.

Members from the Pietermaritzburg unit received a tip off that the alleged drug dealers, aged 36 and 58, were planning to meet in the Pinetown area for a drug deal.

The Durban Metro Police was mobilised, the alleged dealers were spotted and their vehicle was intercepted and searched. “During the search, a large quantity of assorted drugs were found,” said Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo of the Hawks.

The recovered drugs included 1 360 mandrax tablets, 38 000 heroine capsules, 760 ecstasy tablets, cocaine, tablets as well as 4kgs of powder that he police suspect to also be drugs. “The street value of the confiscated drugs is approximately R1.8-million,” said Mhlongo.

Six hand guns were found in the vehicle and the recovered firearms will be sent for ballistic tests to determine if they were used in any other crimes.

“The alleged drug dealers were arrested and charged for dealing in drugs and for the possession of unlicensed firearms,” said Mhlongo.

“In a separate incident, the Durban Organised Crime Hawks members and the Shongweni K9 unit arrested two men aged 50 and 57 for dealing in drugs in the Sydenham area in Durban,” said Mhlongo. He said 4 000 mandrax tablets, two packets of cocaine, six heroin capping trays and 9kgs of heroin powder were recovered. “The street value of the seized drugs is approximately R2.5 million.
