Layla O’Neill was diagnosed just nine days after her fourth birthday with neuro plasm glial ependymoma. “Not much is known about this rare form of brain and spinal cord cancer,” said Shirley Swemmer, host of the Crowhurst Christmas Faire. Layla was among the first to be diagnosed with this particular cancer and faces daily challenges with few treatment options. She was diagnosed with eight spinal tumours and three brain stem tumours, and underwent a trial of radiation treatment only to find this stunned and then paralysed her body.

Her daily challenges are not the only thing she faces. The crippling medical costs of about R35 000 a month put a huge strain on the family. Fundraisers and any other methods are being used to raise the much-needed funds. The doctors said she wouldn’t make her fifth birthday, but Layla does not give up and is still fighting at eight years old. “She now has 24 spinal tumours, three brain stem tumours and two cysts on her brain but this does not stop the spirit of a lion that she has,” said Shirley.

The manor will be transformed into a Christmas house and filled to the point of overflowing with delightful Christmas gifts and decor. There will be a raffle to raise funds, the entrance fee and a portion of the stall holder fees will go to Layla’s fund. There will also be an honesty bucket at the front entrance.
