Make your bid and support MS auction

There are dozens of exciting items up for auction at the fundraiser event in Gillitts on Saturday, 19 November.

THERE will be an exciting auction to raise funds for the KZN Multiple Sclerosis Society at Quo Restaurant in Gillitts on Saturday, 19 November from 11.30am.

Mr King of the Universe, Dyllan Desfontaines, is a 17-year-old learner at St Henry’s Marist College in Durban and is the guest of honour at the auction. He will be accompanied by Jenna O’Brien, Miss Upper Highway Ambassador. These two young leaders have a passion for helping others and go above and beyond to inspire others to do the same.

The Multiple Sclerosis Society of KZN is in desperate need of funds to retain the services of its social worker and carer. “We are a non-profit organisation run by seven volunteers and serve the need of 150 patients in KwaZulu-Natal,” said Dee Munks, the chairman of Multiple Sclerosis South Africa KZN.

“Multiple Sclerosis is a sinister autoimmune disease of the central nervous system, is incurable and could strike at any stage. Many of the symptoms remain unnoticed by the general public,” she said. “It is different for every person and can lead to a long and debilitating way of life with movement slowly limited until the person is confined to a wheelchair, bedridden or passes away. We look after doctors, lawyers, school secretaries, pharmacists, researchers, teachers – people from all walks of life, from all religions, races or age. Our youngest patient is 17-years-old,”

Symptoms consist of extreme fatigue, spasms, double vision and other vision problems, pain, memory loss, cognitive impairment and limited mobility.

The society is run by a small group of volunteers whose purpose is to bring some joy to the lives of patients as well as emotional, physical and financial support where possible. “Our main means of contact with patients at this stage is our social worker who arranges regular visits or phone calls to ensure the patients are being taken care of and supported,” said Dee.

The cost is R250 a person and it includes a three-course lunch during the auction. The items on auction include a six-night stay at Cabana, a two-night stay in the Drakensberg, tickets to Phezulu, beautiful paintings and gadgets. To book a seat or to make a donation to the NPO, contact Dee Munks via e-mail at rosiemunks@telkomsa.net or on 083 411 4282.
