Cricket bowls introduced to Highway clubs

Everyone can enjoy a game of cricket bowls, young or old.

MEMBERS of the Gillitts Bowling Club presented a new game of bowls to Highway bowlers at the Westville Country Club last Thursday, called B20.

The Gillitts Bowling Club is the forerunner in KZN to take this on board.

The idea was pitched to the club committee by Jenny Cooper and Andy van den Heuvel and Gillits BC is now the proud owner of six sets of this new inventive format.

“Cricket Bowls is a ‘new way’ of playing a very popular ‘old game’ devised in South Africa for the young people and the older generation. It is a game of T20 Cricket played on a bowling green, or artificial green and is played with a conventional set of bowls,” said Andy.

The game was invented by a Benoni resident, Tony Norris, and was launched in Benoni last month. Andy said Tony and his wife came down from Benoni to demonstrate the format and rules of B20 and members of Gillitts along with bowlers from other surrounding clubs attended the demonstration.

Bowlers were then given and opportunity to play and the offer was readily taken up by all in attendance,” said Andy.

He added that everyone can enjoy a game of cricket bowls, young or old. Even corporates can enjoy this game during their team building.

Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
