The National Schools Moot Court competition is an initiative of The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development, in collaboration with the Department of Basic Education, University of Pretoria and the Foundation of Human Rights.

The objective of the competition is to persuade pupils to understand the constitution and its values and to establish a continuous human rights learning programme through education and information.

“The key element of the competition is to afford pupils with an understanding on how the constitution and the law

work. Pupils are given a hypothetical case to participate as both the applicant and respondent. A panel of judges and professional magistrates from the Durban Court judged the KZN competition,” said Bongani Mahlangu, regional communications practitioner for Legal Aid SA.

Mahlangu congratulated Sithengile Secondary School on their win.

Sithengile teacher, Nonhlanhla Griffiths who played a huge role in encouraging the pupils to take part in this competition said she was proud of Zakhe and Seluleko.

“I would like to express my gratitude to the teachers they worked with, Mrs Nyassengho, Mr Sithole and Mr

Mbanjwa. A special thank you to their coach, Caroline Parker,” said Griffiths.
