Blocked sewer line contaminates Palmiet River

It is believed a company dumped grease in the sewer line.

A BLOCKED section of the sewer line is suspected to be the cause of the polluted Palmiet River.

In some parts of the river, the water turned black while in other areas, it turned dark green.

Founder of the Palmiet River Watch, Lee D’Eathe said the river was reported to be polluted at the upstream of Blair Road sewage pump station on Tuesday, 25 October.

“The river was covered with thick foam. In Otto Volek Road, it was reported that the river water had turned brown.”

According to D’Eathe, the sewer line was blocked with industrial waste (possibly grease) and a notice was served to the company responsible.

A Westville resident, Sanet Beukes who also owns a BnB around the Palmiet River with her husband said this is probably the worst pollution she has seen in the water.

“There are species in the water and in other areas fish have died because of this. It is also affecting our business as tourists are mostly drawn by the beautiful nature. They will now be welcomed by a dirty river, dead fish and a bad smell,” said Beukes.
